When I got up this morning I noticed that it had been raining through the night. It must have been a decent downpour as everything was ringing wet. No worries as it's saved me having to water the garden. When Tony got up we headed out to the garden centre to buy compost and chipped bark for the new raised planter. The chipped bark is only £1 a bag and today's batch was beautiful partially composted stuff so I was really pleased when I tipped it into the new planter. It'll rot down over the seasons and add it's goodness back into the compost. It's a heckuva lot cheaper than filling it with bought in compost and I haven't heard whether there's the offer of free green waste compost yet.
The cans are to hold the net away from the seedlings as they emerge. We have a huge problem with cats using my garden as a public loo and know that they'd have made a beeline for all that soft fluffy compost if I hadn't netted it. I've sown carrots, red lettuce, rainbow chard and a few cuca melon. It's a bit early for them but the drive is very sheltered and gets full sun for a big part of he day. If it gets really cold I can throw a fleece and a polythene cover over them to keep them warm overnight. My plan is to thin the red lettuce seedlings and move some to the back garden. I will transplant some of the green ones and turn that little part of the plot into a checkerboard pattern as I think it will look lovely. If all the rainbow chard sprout I want to use the different colours that develop to create a pretty border in one of my raised beds.
