The Best Jewelry At The 2019 Met Gala - Forbes Posted: 06 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT Each year, fashion and jewelry enthusiasts anticipate the first Monday in May for the most important of New York's red carpet events, the Met Gala, which celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit. This year it's entitled "Camp: Notes On Fashion". Just hearing the name conjures up over-the-top, flamboyant and exaggerated looks. And many of the celebrities played it to the hilt, paying homage to what the exhibit is all about. Inspired by Susan Sontag's well-known 1964 essay "Notes on Camp," which explores and describes 'camp', the exhibit covers theatre, excess, irony and parody in fashion. Some of the displays in different sections feature the drama, eccentricities as well as the gay subcultures that dates back to Versailles and other parts of Europe and America from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Bob Mackie. Karl Lagerfeld Elsa Schiaparelli, Moschino and Dior are some of the designers highlighted in the exhibit alongside painting and sculpture from the 17th century through the present day. Although 2018's "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" exhibit brought out high drama such in the jewels and fashion worn by Rihanna, Madonna and a host of other celebrities, this season has gone beyond the theatrical looks of last year to pure extravagance. The fashion ranged from embellished takes on Disney Princesses, to the flamboyance of Marie Antoinette to Barbie Doll chic with a whole lot of crystals, feathers and sequins that sometimes competed with the jewels. When stripped down from the overall effect, the diamond and gemstone pieces worn brought on the bling in often ornate, statement-making pieces that were still elegant and glamorous but in context added to the overall effect. It was a night of fun, and flashy frivolity that was enhanced by the campy co-hosts Lady Gaga with her four changes and Tiffany & Co jewels, Harry Styles, Gucci's Alessandro Michele and tennis icon Serena Williams. Here are some of the best jewels of the evening: Lily Collins debuts Cartier Magnitude High Jewelry necklace with emeralds, rock crystal, onyx, black lacquer, and diamonds, set in platinum and Magnitude High Jewelry earrings with emeralds, rock crystal, onyx, and diamonds, set in platinum.
